Kumeyaay Native Americans
Third grade social studies curriculum includes a study of our local history. The Kumeyaay Native Americans inhabited this entire region utilizing the many natural resources available to them. This October, the third graders learned about the food, clothing, shelter and culture of the Kumeyaay as they compared it to our own modern way of life. The students created Kumeyaay villages and learned how to play a traditional Kumeyaay game called “Stick Dice”.
Their study culminated with a field trip to Torrey Pines State Reserve where the Kumeyaay inhabited many years ago. They learned how the Kumeyaay used the native plant and animal species, along with the local river system, to meet all of their basic needs.
