Second Grade Back To School Information

Dear Parent:

Welcome to second grade!  My name is Mr. Hillila and I am delighted that your child is in my second grade class.  With your encouragement, your child will be a part of many exciting and rewarding experiences this academic year.

I have provided information on the policies, procedures and expectations for the new school year.  Please review the information with your child and sign the contract at the end of the letter so that I know you have read and understand the policies, procedures, and expectations.

Classroom Discipline Plan

I firmly believe that lifelong success depends on self-discipline. I have developed a Classroom Discipline Plan that gives every student the opportunity to manage his or her own behavior.  I will discuss this plan with the students, but would appreciate it if you would review the plan with your child as well.  Working together, all of us can ensure that your child will receive the most positive educational climate possible.

Classroom Rules:

  • Raise your hand before speaking.
  • Remain seated at all times.
  • Follow directions.
  • Respect others.
  • Work quietly.
  • Always do your best.

If a student chooses to break a rule, these are the consequences:

  • First Warning: Verbal Warning
  • Second Warning: Sign-in
  • Third Warning:  Missed Recess
  • Fourth Warning: Parent Conference
Homework Policy

Students will be given homework Monday through Thursday.  The homework will be a review of the lessons that the children do that day.

Each Monday, your child will take home the weekly homework report for the week.  It will contain their assignments and any tests for the week.  Review the assignments with your child and sign the weekly report.  You may leave comments on the lines provided for you.  The weekly homework report must be returned on Fridays.

If a homework assignment is not completed the child must complete the assignment during their free period.  Homework is very important in reinforcing the day’s lessons.

Tips on how to help your child with homework:

  • Help your child establish a homework time every day.
  • Provide a quiet, well-lit place where there will be little interruption.
Reading

In our class, I try to incorporate many reading activities to help strengthen the students reading skills.  Our classroom has a small library and students are allowed to check out books during the week.  Also, please read with your child for at least 15 minutes each night.

Parent Conferences

Please fell free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  I’ll be more than happy to set up an appointment to meet with you.  Please send a note with your child or call the school at 437-4431 to make an appointment.

After School Activities

Sacred Heart offers a variety of after school programs, such as, drama, art, sports, choir, band, homework help and more.  Information will be sent home in the family envelopes.

Uniforms

Please have your child’s name written on the tags of their school uniforms and P.E. clothes.  Clothing that is left in the classroom without identification will be sent to the lost and found.

Weekly Mass

We will attend Mass on Monday morning.  We will leave the classroom by 7:50 a.m. please be on time.  Father Mike does not like it when students arrive late.  If your child arrives late he or she is to sit in the back pew of the church with Mrs. Cohen, the second grade aide.

Absences

Please try to plan family vacations during school vacation times.  If a student is going to be out for an extended period of time, please make arrangements for the assignments so your child can keep up.

P.E. Schedule

Second graders will have P.E. on Tuesday and Thursday from 11:15 to 11:55.  Please have your child bring their P.E. clothes in a bag; they will change for P.E. during recess.

Emergency Snack

Please have your child bring a small snack bag to school.  Include bottled water and snack items that can keep for long periods of time.  Write their name on the bag and send it back to school within the first few days.
