Tending The Heart January 2011

The Harris Rapport

Now into the second decade of the 21st Century, we are aware that some of our current students will live into the 22nd Century!

With that in mind, we invite you ~ and prospective parents and students you know ~ to join us Sunday, January 30, for a special Open House.

Teachers, student representatives, parents, and I will welcome you at 706 C Avenue from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Visit with teachers, see your former classrooms, watch a Kindergarten presentation, enjoy refreshments, and ~ find your picture among the graduation photos adorning the school walls.

We are proud of our alumni and hope at least some of you will be with us January 30. Of course, you are welcome to visit anytime!

Sincerely in Christ,

Peter Harris, Principal

A Word from an Alum to Be

Alexander Danilowicz, Class of 2011, recently won a Knights of Columbus Essay Contest on the theme The Responsibility of a Catholic in a Free Society. His conclusion reflects the SHPS faith foundation established by the Benedictine Sisters over 60 years ago.

The responsibility of Catholics in a free society is to help others, go to Mass on Sunday and pray often. If you help others, you’ll feel good in your heart. If you go to Mass on Sunday, you’ll learn and understand more about God and Jesus. If you pray often, you’ll be closer to God. If you accomplish those three things, you’ll have done your responsibility in a free society, and you’ll have done a lot to keep our society free.

Oh, the Places You've Been!

This issue we report on college degrees and careers that you pursued since receiving Sacred Heart diplomas in the ’60s and ’70s.  The information is based on profiles received for the school’s 50th and 60th anniversary celebrations in 1998 and 2008. They are kept in binders by decades.

Of the 91 grads and alumni from 1960 through 1979 that have sent profiles to SHPS:

Three serve the Lord: two as diocesan priests and one alumna as a youth minister.

51 graduated from colleges all over the US, including Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, University of Rochester, Loyola Marymount, United States Naval Academy plus numerous colleges and universities in California, such as the University of San Diego and University of San Francisco.

Nine entered healthcare fields ~ becoming nurses (6), psychologists (2), and one a doctor of neonatology.

Seven majored in education, including one who received a Ph.D.

Six more became lawyerswith four of them graduating from USD Law School.

Three alumni completed military careers and two then pursued second careers as airline pilots.

An alum from the ’70s married after college an SHPS coed that graduated two years behind him.

Two 70s alumnae have children that graduated from SHPS in the ’90s and ’00s.

Next month find out where grads and alums from the ’80s to the ’10s have been!
