Tending The Heart

The Harris Rapport

We’re looking forward to several major events in the coming weeks. First, we will grant diplomas to our 63rd graduating class on June 11. Thirty students will become SHPS alums at a Baccalaureate Mass at Sacred Heart Church.

Next we hope to see many of you at our 1st Annual SHPS Alumni Picnic in Spreckels Park on Sunday, July 3. Bring your own basket (BYOB) along with classmates and family, plus a dozen cookies for a Sweet Treat Swap. More details below.

Then, if you’re in Coronado the next day, stand up and cheer for the school’s entry in the Fourth of July Parade. Our theme, “One Nation Under God,” will be portrayed by banners and students in uniform.

In the announcer script for our entry, we pay tribute to three generations of Szymanskis - Andy, David, Michelle, Laura, and Paulette –all of whom are long-standing members of the Parade Committee ~ and SHPS grads.

Have a wonderful summer and drop us a line sometime!

Sincerely in Christ,

Peter Harris
Principal

From the Archives, Sister sez ... part 5

In this Sister sez, Sacred Heart’s first principal, Sister Mary Angela, concludes her comments about the first months at school. The excerpt is taken from a 1947 letter written to sisters living at the Benedictine mother house in Atchison, Kansas; the beginning of her comments appeared in May 2011 Tending the Heart.

The children here are easy going – no doubt the climate makes for that – one has to use considerable ingenuity to devise ways and means of punishment. For example, if one is kept after school for tardiness or misbehaving in church, it is not uncommon to have three or four more come along and say, “Sister, I misbehaved in Church, don’t you want to punish me?”

You may be surprised to hear that California is going to wage a campaign next spring to see if schools can be made tax exempt. Father Purcell says ‘a drive to bring California into the Union.’ We say ‘a drive to bring California into the Catholic Church.’

You cannot image how irreligious the people in California are; parents say that they are Catholics, but they do not work at it. Or parents just say they haven’t taken up religion yet.

In spite of the laxity on the part of the parents, the children are hungry for religion and are most attentive during religion classes. There is one thing certain – San Diego Diocese needs Catholic schools and Bishop Buddy is right in doing all he can to bring Catholic education to his diocese.

Our boys all wear blue corduroy trousers and white shirts; girls blue pleated skirts, white blouses and blue boleros. A uniform is almost a “have to” in California; if you didn’t, boys and girls would not come dressed for school.
