Tending The Heart February 2011

The Harris Rapport

We were happy to see many alums back on campus in the last two months, including four who visited our All School Open House January 30. Joe Martin ’53, Alejandro Aizpuro (’88) and Montse Lugo Aizupru (’95only had to come across the bridge, but Penny Ecks Richichi ’79 was in from Pittsburgh.

We were glad to welcome several parishioners to the Open House, including Mrs. Lin O’Leary, who taught first grade at SHPS for 20 years.

During December, a large group of alums from the ’00s joined us for fun, confetti eggs and watching me plummet into the dunk tank at the Guadalupe Fiesta.

J.P. Smith ’58 from New York and Tom Quast ’92 from Annapolis also came to visit and check their class photos in the Graduation Galleries on the first and second floors.

In January Justin Bayaca ’01, Michael Garcia ’04, and Annamarie McKellips, ’07 were with us. Justin visited language arts teacher, Mrs. Deborah Nordlie, and, while Michael was picking up his brother, Diego (SHPS Class of 2013), he told us about spending his semester break from Chico State serving on a medical team at a Thailand refugee camp.

A senior at Our Lady of Peace, Annamarie came to help screen the entries in the school’s annual Science Fair coordinated by Mrs. Marlene Twomey.

We are always interested in our alums and are thankful when you return. God bless you.

Sincerely in Christ,

Peter Harris, Principal

From the Archives, Sister sez ...

The school’s archives contain a wealth of photos, letters, albums and scrapbooks from Sacred Heart’s early years. Sister sez ..., a TTH feature in this and coming issues, will excerpt early letters that the Benedictine Sisters wrote to their mother house inAtchisonKansas after arriving in Coronado on August 12, 1947.

We live at 148 “H” Avenue and were welcomed by a sweet, old lady of the parish who so kindly gave us the use of her furnished home. She had a delicious meal for us.

After the meal we inspected our beds - only four beds for the eight of us. It is a two story house, but the rooms are small. ONE bathroom for the eight of us was an interesting item during our stay in this place. One would have to see it in action to appreciate it. In the morning to make it in time for prayers, someone conceived the bright idea to wash any time from 2 a.m. on. No one became alarmed if they heard water splashing at any hour.

The first thing we did was to rearrange the house for our own convenience. We appointed Sister Cornelia procurator to see that all things were in their proper place on our departure.

Since the lady had no washing facilities, one of the parishioners who had a Bendix (an automatic washer) offered to do our washing for us.

Sister Serena’s dear parents who helped us out in many a pinch brought us a nice lunch basket to carry our lunch to school. Sister Leonilla prepared the lunch, brought it up to school at noon and then went back home.

This home is about twelve blocks from school. We have a very small faculty room in the school, which we use during the lunch hour. The size of it would make you wonder how we manage. – Sister Aquina
